Gertha Lee Peyton-Sims was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on April 24,1959 to Estella Peyton and the late Ralph Ray Peyton. She graduated from high school and went on to earn her Associate of Science Degree in Nursing. Gertha was affectionately known as "Big Gert" by many. She was the driven force behind her family; the matriarch and the "go to" woman. Her family meant everything to her. She had different bonds with different people, but the love was the same. Gertha was a force to be reckoned with. She said what she said and meant what she said. She expressed her love through cooking and warm hospitality. She loved her big purses, perfume and jewelry. She was loved and will be missed by many. Gertha was preceded in death by her father Ralph, her husband, Willie Lee Sims, Sr.; her daughter, Ebony Peyton; grand daughter, Alexis Nicole Mitchell; and nephews, Ralph Ray Peyton, III and Laronald Wimbush. Gertha was called home peacefully on Sunday, February 8, 2026. She is survived by: her mother, Estella Peyton; two daughters, Sharmaine Sims Mobley-Richardson (Anthony) and Angel Williams (Horace); her son, Willie Lee Sims, Jr., her grandchildren, Willie Williams (Michelle), Glennis Mobley (Meka), Ki’Yondrea Redfield, Antwione Sims, Tre’Pavis Mobley (Dalanie), and Antavious Richardson; her great- grandchildren, Danielle, Lendeya, Jeffrey, Jamarcus, Gleniya, Paris, Remi’anna, Marlei, Jaheim, Zayden, Zariannah, Zyla, KJ, Kiana, Josiah, Xzavier, Zion and Alexis "Stinky"; her siblings, Stella Joseph (Arios), Ralph Ray Peyton, Jr. "Chucky", Gloria Morton-Harmon, Margaret Allen, John Darrell Peyton "Big P-Toy", Charlene Dyer "Shug", Richard Lee Thorton Peyton (Sheama) and Bonita Holloman (Lionell); devoted friend, Ronald Southward; best friends, Sharon Dawkins, Jessie Coleman and Angela Carr; devoted nieces and nephews, Latonya, Jason (Crystal), Lil Johnny "P-Toy", Heather, Joneay (Keva), Shionquesa and Khaliyah; special great niece, Teonshae; Gertha is also survived by a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and other sorrowing relatives and friends.
